Many of the side chapels at Catedral de Santa María de Burgos (Spain) are more lavishly decorated than much of the cathedral’s central section, which, for example, doesn’t contain much stained glass. Perhaps unrestricted funding for the cathedral’s construction was not abundant, and that much donor funding was instead earmarked for side chapels where the donors and family members were subsequently interred. One such example is the lavishly appointed Chapel of the Constables, paid for by Pedro Fernández de Velasco (2nd Count of Haro) (1425–1492), who is interred here beside his wife Mencía de Mendoza y Figueroa. |
