At the western outskirts of Frómista, this image brings together a mundane section of the Camino Francés with a graffiti-enhanced traffic sign and a shadow self-portrait of the photographer beside the sign’s shadow pointing toward Santiago de Compostela. The unmodified sign alerts drivers to watch for deer crossing the road. The sign’s green graffiti includes the word “Renogrino”—a parody of the Spanish word for pilgrim (peregrino). “Reno” in Spanish means “reindeer.” The image of the deer has also been modified to include the likeness of a backpack with a suspended scallop shell (symbolic of the Camino, but see also)—items commonly worn by pilgrims. |
