Cattle Grazing’s Role in Reducing the Vitality of Desert Grasslands
In the 1960s Steve Johnson’s interest in photography and a love of nature led him to recognize the pervasive harms that livestock grazing inflicts on public lands.
Initially a middle-school biology teacher, Johnson served from 1972 until 1989 as the southwestern field representative for
Defenders of Wildlife.
More recently, he has consulted for environmental organizations about the impacts of livestock production on public lands and endangered species.
