9 Sep 2013, 11:57. Vicente Galbete’s iron sculpture installed where the Camino Francés crosses the summit of Alto del Perdón, Spain. The sculpture represents the evolution of the Pilgrim’s Way throughout history by a procession of 14 natural-size figures from different eras. The sculpture was funded by the energy company that constructed the ridge-top wind farm consisting of 40 turbines, some of which are seen in the photo. But even such renewable energy is not without an environmental cost. One study found 64 bird collisions per turbine per year producing an estimated 0.5–1.5% additional mortality on local breeding bird populations. |
